Do golden retrievers shed?
Yes, generously. Golden retrievers shed year-round and blow their undercoat twice a year, usually spring and fall. A quick brush a few times a week keeps most of it off the couch, and during coat-blow season a daily once-over with an undercoat rake makes a real difference. There is no such thing as a non-shedding golden.
How much exercise does a golden retriever need?
Most adult golden retrievers need one to two hours of activity a day: walks, fetch, swimming, or playing with other dogs. A bored golden invents projects, and you will not like their projects. Puppies and seniors need less, in shorter sessions.
Are golden retrievers good with kids and other dogs?
Famously, yes. Golden retrievers were bred to work closely with people and tend to be patient, social, and eager to please. Every dog is an individual, though, so early socialization and supervision around small children still matter.
What is the difference between English cream and American golden retrievers?
They are the same breed. "English cream" describes goldens from European lines, which tend to be paler, stockier, and blockier in the head; American lines run more golden-to-red and lighter in build. Both are welcome in DC Goldens, along with every shade in between.
