Heat index up to 83°F today
That is the National Weather Service's Caution range, a scale made for people, and it assumes shade: full sun can add up to 15°F. Goldens have 2.67 times the odds of heatstroke that Labradors do, which the researchers think the thicker coat may explain, and most dog heatstroke follows exercise, usually an ordinary walk. Go in the cooler hours, keep to the shade, and if your golden slows down or stops, end the walk and help them cool off.

Sunny pavement today 4pm to 5pm
On a 120°F day in Las Vegas, researchers measured sunlit surfaces, asphalt and concrete among them, 36°F to 56°F hotter than the same material in shade, so grass and shade are the cooler way through these hours. Resting the back of your hand on the pavement is a sensible habit, though the advice on how long ranges from 5 to 10 seconds and none of it has been tested.

Thunderstorms possible today 5pm to 8pm
The National Weather Service gives them a 30 to 50% chance. Almost a third of dogs are sensitive to noise (32% of 13,700 dogs in a Finnish study), and fear of thunder grows with age. Notice is what helps: walk before it arrives, and set up a quiet spot ahead of time. If storms upset your golden, talk to your vet before storm season.
